Punjabi Psalter Illustrations

These illustrations were commissioned for a book by Dr. Yousaf Sadiq, an Anthropology Professor at Wheaton College (IL). This publication (currently in process) tells the story of the translations of Psalms into the Punjabi language in the late nineteenth century. The translated Psalms were set to indigenous music and still vital to modern day worship in multiple countries, especially in Pakistan. The Punjabi Psalter Society hopes to preserve cultural memory of these Psalms and their usage within indigenous churches.
I worked alongside Dr. Sadiq to bring specific moments from this story to life through pencil illustrations. The goal was to create realistic illustrations that would complement the vintage photographs also being used. It was a challenge to create detailed images of a time, place and culture so different from my own, but I enjoyed the process of collaborating and how it pushed me as an artist. I am honored to have been apart of this project and grateful for how it enriched my own faith and artistic practice.
The following illustrations are pencil on paper, 11 in x 14 in.
